1) Article: A History of Zines

Kero, R. (2021, December 2) A History Of Zines. Book Riot. https://bookriot.com/history-of-zines/.

Summary: This article describes how underground press has been used as a platform for marginalized voices since its inception. It briefly covers the history of fan zines, punk zines, feminist zines, queer zines, and other subcultural movements. 

Text Complexity and Accessibility: I agree with Story Toolz's quantitative assessment of the text, which calculated the average grade level to be "Grade 8.9". The article contains straightforward descriptions, casual language, and short approachable paragraphs, which make it quantitatively assessable for 8-9th grade students. The qualitative level of the text, including its historical and political context, is somewhat complex and assumes basic familiarity with fan cultures (Star Trek) and political movements (anarcho-punk, feminist, etc...). Considering the quantitative and qualitative factors, this text would be suited for early high school students with its approachable language and diverse topics. 

Vocabulary: Commerical Publication vs Underground Press, DIY, Photocopy, Xerox, Subculture, Marginalized. Punk, Feminist, and Queer movements.

Text Purpose: To build contextual knowledge on the historical origins of Zines. To build an understanding of how the self-published nature of zines attracts and empowers unrepresented voices. To have students act as artists - learning the historical context of a topic or medium to better navigate the art world and elevate one's work. 

Thinking Activities: Students will create a K-W-L chart to aid in their understanding of the text.

Summary: The book Whatcha Mean What's A Zine, highlights zine history, how to make your own zine, zine topics, strategies, and other guides. The book is a collaborative effort that includes work from different authors and artists. The variety of art styles and formatting choices in this text, create a unique and engaging reading experience. 

Text Complexity and Accessibility: 

The Qualitative reading level of this book is listed as "7th grade and up" by its author. I agree with this assessment because the text presents information in middle school-friendly language providing definitions and glossaries for more difficult terms. Additionally, the blocks of text are often broken up and made into lists or charts. However, This text presents information in a handwritten and collage style, giving the text a handmade quality. The fonts and chaotic format might be hard to comprehend for some students, while these same qualities might be engaging for others. It is necessary to keep this in mind when determining the accessibility of this text for specific students. The quantitative skill level of the text is around the 7th-9th grade level. The content of the book is easy to understand and provides the necessary background information when discussing more complex topics. I think that while this book would work for a middle school classroom, its universality makes it suitable for early high schoolers as well.

Text Purpose: To provide alternative textual presentations (comics, charts, illustrations, etc...), and to allow exploration and choice-based reading.

Thinking Activities: Students will read the table of contents and choose a 'chapter' that they find interesting. When reading this chapter, Students will write down one thing they learned and one thing that inspired them. Students will then break into small groups and share their thoughts with their peers.

Summary: This video is a quick overview that encourages its audience to make a zine. It touches on what a zine is, why you should make one, and the possibilities of the medium. The video also serves as a great visual aid, showcasing a variety of zine types and topics.
